Trump confirms he is ‘open’ to Putin as Iran-Israel mediator

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has expressed openness to Russian President Vladimir Putin serving as a mediator in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. Speaking to ABC News on Sunday, Trump confirmed that mediation was discussed during a lengthy phone call with Putin the previous day.

“He’s ready. He called me about it,” Trump said, noting their hour-long conversation focused more on the Middle East situation than on Russia’s own issues. Trump added, “I believe this is going to be resolved.”

Following the call, the Kremlin reported that Putin had denounced Israel’s recent strikes on Iran and stressed the risk of further escalation. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin reiterated Russia’s readiness to help facilitate dialogue. He also reminded that Moscow had previously proposed measures to support progress in US-Iran nuclear negotiations.

“Russia’s consistent position in favor of a peaceful resolution hasn’t changed,” Ushakov stated.

Despite the cancellation of US-Iran nuclear talks in Oman after Israel's airstrikes, Trump claimed that dialogue is still underway. “They want to make a deal. They’re still talking,” he said, implying that the conflict could push diplomatic efforts forward.

Asked whether the US might get involved militarily, Trump replied: “We’re not involved right now. It’s possible we could be, but not at this moment.”

The Iran-Israel conflict erupted on June 12, when Israeli strikes targeted Iranian nuclear sites, killing senior officials and triggering days of retaliatory missile attacks from Tehran.
